A Little Wild, Still So Beautiful

Late Summer on the Farm

After a weekend of rain, the skies finally cleared tonight, and I went out to walk amongst flowers.

My inbox was full this evening with people hoping the stand would be open tomorrow, Monday. I had planned to give the farm a day to catch up, but as I walked the fields tonight, I realized just how many beautiful flowers are still here.

The perennial garden is full of weeds. There are things I meant to get to weeks ago that still haven’t been done. Some of the sunflower heads are covered so I can save seed for next year, while most are being left for the birds, bees and nature to enjoy.

This is also the time of year when, as a flower farmer, you realize you’re getting tired.

Not tired of the flowers or of what I do. Just the kind of tired that comes from months of planting, watering, weeding, cutting, arranging and trying to keep up with a season that never really slows down.

Maybe you know that feeling too.

Sometimes we look around and see the weeds, the unfinished jobs and everything we haven’t gotten to yet.

But tonight I looked a little closer.

There are still so many flowers blooming. So much color. So much life.

And it reminded me why I do this.

So yes, I’ll open the stand tomorrow.

Because if these flowers can continue to bring a little joy, brighten someone’s kitchen table, or simply make someone smile on their way home, then I’m happy to keep sharing them for as long as the season allows.

The farm may be a little wild and a little tired right now.

So am I.

But there is still so much beauty here.

And still so much joy to share.
