The Season is Starting to Shift

There’s something about September on a flower farm.

The mornings feel a little different. The light changes earlier each night, the mums are starting to show their color, and somehow the fields are still giving us armfuls of flowers.

Even this late in the season, I’m still cutting buckets full of zinnias, dahlias, cosmos, amaranth and so many other beautiful things. Some days I look at everything still blooming and wonder how we’re already this far into September.

This is also the part of the season when I start to feel it.

The early mornings, the cutting, arranging, restocking, subscriptions, weddings, answering messages, keeping up with the stand and trying to stay one step ahead of everything that needs to be done.

But then I walk out to the stand and see that bouquets are gone, someone has left a sweet note, or a customer tells me the flowers made their day, and I’m reminded why we keep doing this.

The little stand has had some very busy days lately, and I’m so grateful for everyone who continues to stop, shop and support this little farm.

It still means just as much now as it did when we first started.

And while the flowers are still blooming, another kind of growing is happening here too.

After a lot of planning, paperwork, waiting, site visits and figuring things out along the way, the barn project is finally starting to feel real.

The dead ash and pine trees are coming down, the area is being prepared, and seeing the equipment here on the property makes something we’ve talked about for a long time suddenly feel very real.

The barn will give us more room to work, design flowers, store supplies and keep growing the farm in ways that have become harder to manage in our current space. The workshops will continue through all seasons.

It’s exciting. It’s a little overwhelming. And it’s pretty incredible to stand there and think about what this space may look like in another few months.

At the same time, fall is starting to creep in around us.

The mums are budding, pumpkins are showing up, and the colors are slowly beginning to shift from summer into something warmer.

I think that’s what makes September feel so special here.

One season is starting to slow down while another chapter is beginning at the exact same time.

There’s still plenty of beauty left in the fields, plenty of work ahead, and plenty happening behind the scenes.

So for now, we’ll keep cutting, arranging, building, growing and sharing as much of it as we can.

And maybe that’s really what this little farm has always been about.

Not everything is always perfect or finished.

But there is almost always something beautiful growing.
