Catching Up from the Flower Fields: Spring into Summer on the Farm

ree

It’s been a while since I’ve written here — my last post was in March, and somehow we’ve flown through spring and landed right in the heart of summer. Life on the farm has been full, fast-paced, and honestly, beautiful in every chaotic moment.

Spring arrived slowly this year, with cooler temps keeping things tucked in a bit longer than usual — not to mention a surprise mid-April snowstorm. Our earliest bloomers — the daffodils and tulips, followed soon after by the peonies — reminded me why I love this work so much. Each bloom felt like a small miracle after winter.

We spent April and May in full-on prep mode. A wonderful friend and neighbor helped us clear land that had been overtaken by thick vines. It feels incredibly special to know that his grandfather’s gardens were once planted there. More great friends of the flower farm came by to help de-stump the area. My husband built additional raised beds, and before long, I was planting rows — one seed at a time — while wrestling with unexpected rain, unpredictable weather patterns, and of course, the ever-persistent black flies. There’s something humbling about trying to outpace nature — and something grounding when she reminds you who’s in charge.

Now that we’re into July, the farm is filling with color. Zinnias, cosmos, sunflowers, snapdragons — and soon, lisianthus — are all beginning to show their beauty. The pollinators are slowly returning and keeping me company throughout the day. On quiet mornings at the stand, I often find myself reminiscing about how it all began — with a small roadside table made of pallets. It humbles me to see how far we’ve come in just three years. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of my husband, my family, dear friends, and you.

Personally, these past few months have taught me so much about patience, resilience, and the joy in tiny wins. Some days are hard — really hard — sweaty, sunburned, and exhausting. The long, hot days have me up early and out late, doing my best to keep up. But the beauty I see in each bloom always brings me back to center.

As we head into the second half of summer, I’m excited to see more sunflowers, dahlias, and other new varieties of flowers blooming into fall. I’ll be experimenting with more dried bouquets — and maybe, just maybe — taking a day off to breathe it all in.

Thanks for sticking with me — whether you’re a fellow grower, a flower lover, or just someone who enjoys a good farm story. I’d love to hear how your summer is going too. Feel free to leave a comment or send me a message. Your support, kind words, and smiles keep me moving forward.

Until next time,

Kelly
